(RALEIGH) -- It was one year ago on Monday that a severe outbreak of tornadoes ripped through central North Carolina. Darren Figursky with the National Weather Service office in Raleigh said several factors combined to create last year's outbreak.

"They first developed near just west of the Yadkin River as it got up to about noon time and then swept east with discrete individual isolated super cells as they moved across parts of the Triangle and into the Fayetteville area toward I-95 as the afternoon wore on," said Figursky.

The Weather Service reported that the outbreak of April 16, 2011 included 28 confirmed tornadoes.  It was the largest single one day rash of storms in state history.  A total of 24 people died in the storms, including 12 in Bertie County.
