(WASHINGTON, D.C.) -- President Barack Obama is bringing a pitch to keep education loans affordable when he delivers a speech at UNC-Chapel Hill on Tuesday. This is one of three stops Mr. Obama is expected to make on a university campus this week.
The President's weekly radio address on Saturday might have offered a preview of Tuesday's speech. "We should be doing everything we can to put higher education within reach for every American, because at a time when the unemployment rate for American's with at least a college degree is about half the national average, it's never been more important. It's also never been more expensive," said Obama.
The President wants Congress to extend a law, set to expire in July. He said if this law expires, interest rates on new subsidized Stafford loans will double to 6.8 percent.
Mr. Obama's speech is scheduled for Tuesday at 1:05 p.m. from Carmichael Auditorium on the UNC campus.
