(RALEIGH) -- The latest Public Policy Polling poll numbers signal the possible passage of Amendment One in North Carolina. According to the newest survey, 55 percent of those questioned plan to vote yes on the issue, while 41 percent say they will vote against it.
"It is a little disappointing for opponents of the amendment because they had had a fair amount of momentum, but over the last week it looks like things have kind of stabilized," said PPP's Tom Jensen.
He added that it appears there could be an issue with voters understanding all aspects of what is being commonly called the marriage amendment. "Only 40 percent of voters actually know that the amendment bans both gay marriage and civil unions and with that 40 percent of the electorate that really understands the amendment, it's failing by a 60 to 38 margin, but there's a lot of voters who just see this as a straight up or down gay marriage ban. They think that's all this is about," said Jensen.
Jensen said Republicans are considerably more united in their support for the marriage amendment than Democrats are in their opposition. As for Independent voters, they are split in favor of the amendment. Voters will find the amendment issue on the back of the May 8 ballot.
