(GREENVILLE) -- "We look like Mississippi." That was Governor Beverly Perdue's response Friday morning to a question from a WITN Greenville reporter about Tuesday's passage of Amendment One.
"To have been such a progressive, forward-thinking, economically driven state that invested in education and that stood up for the civil rights of people, including the civil rights marches back in the 50s and 60s and 70s, folks are saying, What in the world is going on in North Carolina?" Perdue said.
Sixty-one percent of those who went to the polls on Tuesday approved the constitutional amendment that defines marriage in North Carolina as between one man and one woman.
Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant fired back at Perdue, saying North Carolina's voters are much more in line with his state's traditional values on marriage than those of Perdue. Mississippi voters approved an amendment banning same-sex marriage in 2004.
