(RALEIGH) -- June 1st was the first official day of the Atlantic hurricane season, and federal and state government officials kicked off a public service campaign to urge people in effected areas to plan ahead for hurricanes.
National Weather Service meteorologist Scott Sharpe said, "Right now is actually the time to start preparing. People who own property along the coast, who make frequent visits to the coast, should have an evacuation plan in place as far as supplies needed in case of an emergency and things of that sort, have your family emergency plan already set up."
We've already seen two named storms - Tropical Storm Alberto formed off the coast of South Carolina on May 19th and Tropical Storm Beryl came ashore near Jacksonville, Florida on Memorial Day.
