Fourteen Degrees Eliminated, Two Added at NC Central |

(DURHAM) -- The University of North Carolina Board of Governors approved a comprehensive restructuring at North Carolina Central University in Durham. Fourteen academic programs are being eliminated or merged, including the consolidation of the colleges of science and technology and liberal arts to form a College of Arts and Sciences. Two new degree programs will be established.
“The approval by the Board of Governors means we can shift from planning to implementation,” NCCU Chancellor Charlie Nelms said.
Programs Restructured or Merged include combining Mathematics and Physics is being merged into a single department. English and Modern Foreign Languages are being restructured into a single department.
The Bachelor of Science in Environmental Sciences and Geography is being merged to become Environmental and Geographic Sciences. Computer Information Systems and Computer Science degree programs are being merged. The Dance program is being restructured and moved to the Theatre Department.
Programs Eliminated included the Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in Sociology, Bachelor of Arts in Public Administration, Bachelor of Arts in Art with a Concentration in Teacher Education and Bachelor of Arts in French. The Mass Communication program will become the Department of Mass Communication.
The College of Science and Technology is being merged with the College of Liberal Arts to create the College of Arts and Sciences.
The academic changes are expected to generate approximately $500,000 to strengthen the university’s degree offerings.
