(RALEIGH) – The head of El Pueblo, the largest Hispanic advocacy group in North Carolina said she was thrilled at the President Obama’s announcement that it will stop deporting young illegal immigrants who entered the United States as children if they meet certain requirements.

“We are thrilled because this is going to be as concrete change that is going to help a lot undocumented young people who have been struggling because they do not know what the future will hold for them.” Angeline Echeverría, executive director of El Pueblo said.

However, she noted the president said this was a stop-gap measure and Echeverría said she looks forward to a more permanent solution to the country’s illegal immigration problem, not just for young people who entered the country illegally as children.

Echeverría scoffed at the assertion that the president’s move was amnesty, arguing it covered only a portion of the undocumented population.
