(RALEIGH) -- Two North Carolina Air National Guardsmen died when their C-130 crashed Sunday while fighting the western wildfires have been identified. Family members said Lt. Col. Paul Mikeal and Master Sgt. Robert Cannon were killed in the crash.
Lieutenant Colonial Robert Carver tells WSOC-TV in Charlotte the men loved their job.
"They enjoy this mission. It's a very important mission."
Carver says crews remain focused in the wake of the crash.
"It's not to say they're not affected by this emotionally because they've lost friend and had friends hurt. Clearly that's been the case. But does it affect their job to this vital mission? No."
The C-130 tanker from an Air National Guard wing based in Charlotte was carrying a crew of six when it crashed Sunday.
President Barack Obama, U.S. Senator Kaye Hagan of North Carolina, and North Carolina Gov. Beverly Perdue expressed condolences to families of crew members who died.
North Carolina flags are being flown Tuesday, from sunrise to sunset, at half-staff at state buildings in tribute to the Guardsmen who died.
