(RALEIGH) -- President Barack Obama and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney have been within three points of each other in 21 polls conducted in North Carolina since November. That makes this about as close a swing state as you can get in this year's presidential election.
President Obama was the first Democrat to win North Carolina in decades when he picked it up in 2008. He now holds a single point lead over Romney.
Tom Jensen of Public Policy Polling said this one will go down the stretch. "I think it's pretty unlikely that anything will really shake things up," said Jensen. "I think it's going to be this close all the way down to the election. You just see a very strong core of African-Americans, young voters behind Obama. You see Republicans just strongly unified around Romney."
Jensen said of voters with a party affiliation, very few are willing to change their minds. He estimated that Romney and Obama will fight it out for the remaining ten percent who are independents.
