Eden -- A coal ash spill into the Dan River has drawn the attention of Governor Pat McCrory. Earlier this week, a pipe burst releasing ash into the river in Rockingham County. Just how much damage has been done is still up in the air because of conflicting reports, according to Pete Harrison - Staff Attorney with Waterkeeper Alliance.
Harrison said, "We found some alarming levels of very toxic pollutants in the discharge coming from this coal ash impoundment. While the message from Duke and from the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources seems to be a pretty resounding, there's nothing to worry about."
Harrison added that where the samples were taken is an important factor because the river will dilute the samples farther down the river.
