RALEIGH -- The cleanup is ongoing following a pipe burst at a Duke Energy facility that spilled up to 82,000 tons of coal ash mixed with 27 million gallons of contaminated water into the Dan River. Pete Harrison, a staff attorney with Waterkeeper Alliance, says they have found another leak and said we don't yet know the total effect of this ash on the Dan River.
Harrison said, "There's a lot of ash. There's pure, opaque, dark grey ash that is coating the bottom of the river. This entire river has been radically changed. The chemistry of the entire river bed has been changed for untold miles downstream."
Jeff Brooks with Duke Energy says this drain is to dispose of storm water, but added they are conducting tests to be safe.
