RALEIGH -- Eight people are dead, including five in the last 24 hours, due to the winter weather. Governor Pat McCrory thanked everyone for their efforts this week, but also said that just because the storm is gone, it doesn't mean the danger is too.
McCrory said, "I'm very proud of this team, and I'm proud of the people of North Carolina and how they've handled the last three days. Unfortunately, the final hours of this storm have proved to be the most deadly in our state."
He said to remember that there are still pedestrians on the roads recovering their cars, and civilians near the sidewalks. Two people died Thursday night after a collision with a hit-and-run driver on I-40 in Wake County. The two good Samaritans were outside their vehicles helping other motorists, when they were struck alongside the highway.
