RALEIGH -- After a bad storm, like our recent snow and ice event, tree services will go door-to-door looking for customers. These storms also bring out scammers trying to rip you off.
If a solicitor comes knocking, Attorney General Roy Cooper advises you don't pay up front, avoid fly-by-night companies and check the company out with the Better Business Bureau.
"And then also check out for prices. You can call around and see what a fair price is. Don't let anybody rush you into making a decision."
While many tree removal companies are reputable, Cooper says to keep a skeptical eye out for crooks, who often travel to areas hit by natural disasters.
