I-40 Closed In Western NC

RALEIGH -- I-40 is closed in both directions between Asheville and the Tennessee State Line due to an overturned chemical tanker at Mile Marker 6, according to the state Department of Transportation.

The road is expected to re-open at 12:00 AM on Tuesday.

Traffic heading west is being detoured off of I-40 at Exit 20, US 276 and should use the following detour: Take Exit 53-B for I-240 West then take Exit 4-A for I-26 West. Continue on I-26 West until reaching I-81 near Johnson City, TN. Take Exit 8-A for I-81 South. Continue on I-81 South to re-access I-40 West in Tennessee.

Traffic heading East should use the following detour: Take Exit 421 in Tennessee for I-81 North. Continue on I-81 North until reaching Exit 57-A for I-26 East. Take I-26 East until reaching I-240 East. Continue on I-240 East then take Exit 8 to re-access I-40 East at Exit 53.
