RALEIGH -- The debate over same sex marriage has now worked its way to the offices of registers of deeds and magistrates.

Tami Fitzgerald, executive director of the North Carolina Values Coalition says the Administrative Office of the Courts told registers of deeds and magistrates that had no choice but to marry same sex couples regardless of their beliefs.

"We will continue to fight the battle on that front because people shouldn't have to lose their jobs to protect their religious values."

The coalition distributed a memo, written by the Alliance Defending Freedom, that suggests appointing a deputy within the office to handle marriage licenses when such a conflict arises. legislation being proposed by Senate Leader Phil Berger to clarify the issue, something some legal expert say may not be constitutional.
