CHARLOTTE -- The Great Glacier Controversy of 2015 is now history. After a barrage of criticism, and more than a few caustic one liners on the internet, the operators of Charlotte’s SouthPark Mall have shipped plans for a "glacier" experience to the ocean of history and will adorn the shopping center with a more traditional Christmas Tree.
Multiple media outlets showed video of the glacier scene being dismantled Sunday night with plans to have a tree in place Monday.
David Contis, with Simon Malls told WBTV the decision was made after listening to customer feedback.
"Our focus is on ‘Spreading Love’ which is the theme throughout all of our shopping centers during the holiday season and we are looking forward to celebrating the holidays with our shoppers as we do every year," Contis said.
The Santa set constructed Friday, but by Saturday, they said they would incorporate Christmas trees into the "glacier" installation.
Dislike of the design sparked twitter hashtags and a petition of Change.org.
Simon Malls, the owner of Southpark, is trying what they called a “North Pole” experience at multiple locations. No word on whether an about face similar to the one in Charlotte will be made elsewhere.
