RALEIGH – An Alamance County businessman pleaded guilty Wednesday in Wake County Superior Court to felony tax charges filed by the North Carolina Department of Revenue.

Bobby Dean Workman, 51, of 1818 Broadway Drive, Graham, pleaded guilty on March 2, 2016 to one count of Embezzlement of State property and one count of Embezzlement of County property.

Superior Court Judge Reuben F. Young sentenced Workman to a 16-month minimum, 29-month maximum prison term. The sentence was suspended and Workman was placed on supervised probation for 36 months. Workman paid $25,000 toward restitution at the time of his plea and was ordered to pay the remaining restitution of $2,610.51 within 30 days. He was also ordered to pay a $7,500 criminal fine and complete 100 hours of community service work.

Information presented in court showed that Workman, a corporate officer of Mediachurch, Inc. located in Graham, aided and abetted the corporation to embezzle, misapply and convert to its own use $27,610.51 in North Carolina and Alamance County sales tax, during the period April 1, 2009 through September 20, 2014. During this period of time, Workman held the position of President and was the responsible officer of Mediachurch, Inc., which was under a duty to collect, hold in trust, and remit North Carolina state and county sales tax to the North Carolina Department of Revenue.

The charges against Workman resulted from an investigation by a special agent with the Department’s Criminal Investigations Section in Raleigh.
