Perdue Vetoes Health Care Repeal
Saturday, 05 March 2011 15:50

(RALEIGH) -- Democratic Governor Beverly Perdue has vetoed a bill aimed at blocking provisions in the recent federal health care law.

Perdue cited several reasons for opposing the legislation, which has also been called unenforceable by Democratic Attorney General Roy Cooper.

Perdue said the bill was contradictory to the federal constitution. Likewise, she said it didn't make sense for North Carolina to join a lawsuit challenging health care reform, since 27 other states are engaged in the process.

Perdue also said the bill had unintended consequences that would harm several of the state's health programs - including Medicaid.

Senate President Phil Berger called the veto a political move designed to protect the interests of President Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Washington Democrats.

It's the second veto from Perdue in less than two weeks.
