(RALEIGH) -- Under the new federal healthcare reform law, each state must develop a Health Benefit Exchange where people can shop for coverage. State House lawmakers are at odds over who should have a say in how the exchange runs.
A bill sponsored by Davidson County Representative Jerry Dockham proposes a Board of Directors mainly made up of representatives of health insurance companies or healthcare providers.
Health insurance advocate Leslie Boyd of Asheville says she opposed that bill. She says insurance companies should not be allowed to regulate themselves.
Buncombe County Representative Susan Fisher is sponsoring another bill that would let the Exchange commissioner and the General Assembly appoint board members who are industry experts and consumer advocates.
