(RALEIGH) -- Senate lawmakers are scheduled to hold a final vote on a half-billion dollar overhaul of the health insurance plan for state employees. The Senate tentatively passed the legislation last week by a vote of 30 to 17.
The proposal would require state workers to pay more in out-of-pocket expenses and for the first time ever, charge a monthly premium for current employees and retirees in a more generous plan. The measure would also transfer plan oversight to the State Treasurer and eliminate a wellness initiative aimed at getting state employees to stop smoking or lose weight.
If the bill reaches final Senate approval, the House would still have to approve the bill.
