Wednesday, 07 September 2011 11:43

(RALEIGH) -- The Catholic Diocese of Raleigh is announcing that it will build a new 2000-seat cathedral in the Capital City.  The new cathedral will replace the current "mother church," Sacred Heart Cathedral which only seats 320.

The new church will accommodate a diocese that has grown some 42 percent in the ten years between 2000 and 2010. Bishop Michael Burbidge said the new cathedral, to be named Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral, is expected to cost between $75 million and $90 million and will be built on a 39 acre tract near N.C. State University's Centennial Campus.  Ground will be broken for the project in 2013.
