(RALEIGH) -- State Senate president Phil Berger said a recent week-long trip to China offered valuable insight into ways North Carolina can sell more goods overseas. Berger said the trip gave him an understanding of China beyond what he had heard from others traveling to the area.

"And I don't think that information fully conveyed the breadth and the depth of the development that's taking place," said Berger.

The Rockingham County Republican traveled to Beijing, Shanghai and Hangzhou along with legislative leaders from Alabama and Arkansas. He said visiting the country in person provides a different perspective, especially when it comes to understanding how fast China is growing.

"I saw more cranes in a one-week period than I've seen in any one-week period in my life and maybe in any one-month period, In my life."

Berger also said the trip boosted his level of optimism for increasing exports of North Carolina poultry and hogs. Gov. Beverly Perdue is also scheduled to leave for a trade mission to China and Japan in October.
