(RALEIGH) -- A vote that was expected at the State Board of Education to extend the the 2012-2013 school year by five days did not happen on Thursday.   The board wants the General Assembly to consider it further when they return to session in February.

In the meantime, State Board Chairman Dr. Bill Harrison wants districts to continue as if it will happen. "Continue to build a calendar around 185 days.  It will be easier to make adjustments from 185 to 182 or 180 than it will be to make adjustments from 180 up to 185," said Harrison.

The cost of extending the calendar is something that concerns the state's larger districts.  Implementation could run up to $1 million in some areas like the Mecklenburg system.
