(RALEIGH) -- Despite having smaller populations, states like Iowa and New Hampshire have a big say in who the next Republican nominee for president will be. William Peace University Political Science Professor David McLennan said the fact that North Carolina barely gets any say at all in the primary process highlights a major flaw in the system.
"A state like North Carolina, we're on the back end of the process. North Carolina voters, by the time most primary seasons play out, they don't have a voice in the nominating process," McLennan said.
McLennan also says that the current primary process is too lengthy.
