(RALEIGH) -- A Republican-backed budget for the next fiscal year is headed to Gov. Bev Perdue's desk. Both the Senate and the House approved a $20.2 billion compromise bill on Thursday.
While lawmakers were voting on the measure critics were outside the legislative building. State NAACP President Rev. William Barber was among the protestors.
"We believe this is a very calculated attack on minorities, on women, on poor people," said Barber.
Sen. leader Phil Berger said opponents obviously have not read the budget.
Gov. Perdue has 10 days to sign the budget bill, veto the bill or do nothing, which would allow it to automatically become law.
