(MORRISVILLE) -- Leaders in a Wake County town will vote on a controversial issue Tuesday night that pits gun owners against parents who don't want firearms in public places. A new state law went into effect in December that allows guns in parks and other recreational areas, but towns have the right to ban them. This is the move Morrisville town council member will consider.

"Given some of the violence just recently with two events, one being the one in Colorado and the second one being the Sikh Temple in Wisconsin, just concerns about having guns in parks," said Morrisville town council member Steve Rao.

Rao said gun owners argue that they could prevent violence if they were allowed to carry a weapon in self-defense.  Some have sited these very same two events as an example of where a law abiding citizen with a Concealed Carry Permit could have actually saved lives and injury by using their gun against the alleged shooters.
