(ROCKY MOUNT) -- The North Carolina Highway Patrol confirmed that an 7-year-old elementary school student died Thursday morning after being hit by a pick-up truck near a bus stop. The child is identified as Janell Simmons of Rocky Mount.
The accident happened just before 7:00 am Thursday when a 2002 Ford pick-up truck driven by Eddie Suggs was traveling south on NC 43 south of Rocky Mount. Suggs saw two children standing on the northbound shoulder of NC 43 and a third child standing on the southbound side of the road. The Highway Patrol said Suggs also observed a school bus approaching and slowed his vehicle. It was at this point that Simmons darted across the road and was struck by Suggs' truck.
Simmons was transported to Nash General Hospital where she was pronounced dead a short time later. The Patrol said no charges will be filed in the case and speed was not a factor.
