CHAPEL HILL -- The UNC Board of Governors are wrapping up this month's meeting -- on the road in Cullowhee ---- as they take part in the 125th Anniversary celebration of Western Carolina University.
The school's chancellor, David Belcher, says the school has come a long way since beginning as the Cullowhee Academy in 1889 with 18 students.
"We don't yet have our census date enrollment figures this year, but we anticipate the third consecutive year of record enrollment. We anticipate being over 10,300 students."
Western Carolina is the 5th-oldest university in the U-N-C system. After beginning as a teacher's college, they now offer over 200 undergraduate and graduate degree fields.
